It’s been almost seven years since Malaika released their album Mmatswale, as soon as that album was released the group members Tshedi Moholo and Bongani Nchanga took on solo careers.
More often than not do you find South African groups splitting up and as soon as their solo careers have a boost it’s really hard to reunite all the group members. It’s though that a lot of artists use group approaches to get ahead in the industry and once that is launched and doing well they’re solo careers are introduced to us.
Tshedi reportedly told Daily Sun that Malaika will not be in studio together any time soon.
“I’m sure we won’t be going to the studio any time soon. I don’t know where Bongani is and the group is dead. I don’t know what’s going on. It’s a sad story.”
The story is so sad that in fact Tshedi and Bongani have not seen each other in at least over a year.
“Many people have been asking me about him. Last year I was told he went to Sony to demand his clearance.”
Another source told Daily Sun that there isn’t much action to be anticipated around a come back album between the two musicians.
Said the source: “Tshedi is often tied up with her acting and international commitments, but she’s stated that she’s available to record a song for the group. Sony Music is aware that Tshedi can’t record a Malaika album by herself without Bongani.”
An additional source at Sony Music said: “We tried to get them back in the studio but have failed. We can’t get hold of Bongani. ”
The group bought a fresh sound to the music industry and their awards and success are the perfect mirror of that. It’s a pity to hear that some differences just can’t be put aside for the sake of delivering good music for the fans.
So yes guys, no new music from Malaika for you.
