South African actress and reality TV star Khanyi Mbau has opened up about why she feels the acting industry has never fully accepted her as a talented actress, despite spending many years building her career.

Speaking on the Inside Story Network podcast with actress Nambitha Ben-Mazwi, Khanyi shared an honest conversation about her journey in the entertainment industry. The two actresses reflected on memorable roles, life on set, career growth, and the personal experiences that have shaped their performances.

While discussing her career, Khanyi explained that she believes every role she takes on comes into her life for a reason. She said she often draws from her own experiences and emotions to make her characters feel real and relatable.

“Every script that I have chooses me because I know that baggage I have. Sometimes I read it and it’s like, ‘there’s that childhood issue sitting there. I’m going to use it this time. It’s like shooting Meet the Khumalo’s now was based on my breakup in Dubai because she was going through such a bad break up and her husband feeling it’s all about her career and never them.”

Khanyi plays the lead role of Grace Khumalo in the Netflix comedy film Meet the Khumalos. She explained that the emotions she experienced during her breakup in Dubai helped her connect with her character in a genuine way.

She also shared that she is intentional about the projects she accepts because they often help her work through personal experiences.

“I always choose my roles and shows that I will play because they talk to me and that’s how I can deal with them without being judged because now it’s in motion.”

Despite her success on screen, Khanyi admitted that she has never felt fully recognised by the acting industry. She believes many people continue to judge her based on her public image instead of acknowledging her talent and dedication as an actress.

Reflecting on those feelings, Khanyi said there has always been a barrier she has had to overcome to be accepted by the industry.

“That moment at the gate is literally how the industry would never give me my accolades and want to accept that she’s an actress. They’d rather say, ‘No, the gold digger. Oh, no hanging with the cars.’ So, I always feel like there’s be a gate that I always have to break down to be part of the club. Thats why it was so real.”

Khanyi’s comments offer a deeper look at the challenges she has faced throughout her career. While she has become one of South Africa’s most recognised entertainers, she believes her acting abilities have often been overshadowed by public perceptions.

Through the interview, Khanyi made it clear that acting is more than just performing a role. For her, it is a way to turn personal experiences into meaningful performances while continuing to prove that she deserves to be recognised as an actress.
