Sindi Dlathu Remembers Cynthia Shange After Her Passing

Award-winning actress Sindi Dlathu, known for her role on The River, has paid tribute to legendary former beauty queen Cynthia Shange following her passing.

Sindi Dlathu took to Instagram to honour the late icon with a deeply moving message, reflecting on the kind of person she was and the memories they shared. She wrote, “Grace, love and gentleness…this is how I will always remember you Ma.
You carried such depth and intelligence, sharp wit and a remarkable sense of humour. Our conversations flowed so effortlessly, each one meaningful and enriching.
Those are moments I will forever cherish.
You were always warm and always brought light into every space you entered. Your presence was both grounding and uplifting.
I could write a book about you, but I will leave it here.
You wore your crown with grace Ndlovukazi, in every sense of the word.

Cynthia Shange passed away on 20 April 2026 at the age of 76. According to a statement released by her family, she died at a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal after battling an illness.

Shange’s legacy remains significant in South Africa’s history. She first made her mark by becoming Miss Natal before going on to win the Miss Black South Africa title. This milestone made her the first Black beauty queen to win a Miss South Africa title during a time when opportunities for Black women were limited.

Her success led her to represent South Africa at the Miss World competition in London in 1972, opening doors for many who would follow. She later stepped into the film industry, where she appeared in Udeliwe, one of the country’s first Black feature films.

Media personality LaConco has also paid tribute to Cynthia Shange, as messages of remembrance continue to pour in. Her life and legacy continue to inspire many, and she will be remembered as a woman who carried herself with grace and broke barriers for generations to come.
