Nonhle took to her Instagram page to announce the heartbreaking news and to honour her mother’s life. In her post, she wrote, “Celebrating the life of Cynthia Philiswe Shange. 27 July 1949 – 20 April 2026. A graceful and compassionate soul whose presence brought warmth, dignity, and kindness to all who knew her. We honour her journey, her strength, and the love she shared so generously. Funeral details to follow soon.”

In the caption, she added, “With a heavy heart, I share the news of our Dear Mother. please keep my family in your prayers during this difficult time.”

Cynthia Shange was more than just a mother — she was a powerful figure in South Africa’s history of Black representation. She made history by becoming Miss Natal and later winning the Miss Black South Africa title. This achievement made her the first Black beauty queen to win a Miss South Africa title at a time when opportunities for Black women were limited.

Her success led her to represent South Africa at the Miss World competition in 1972, opening doors not only for herself but for many others who followed. Her journey continued into the film industry, where she played a role in one of South Africa’s first Black feature films, Udeliwe.

Following Nonhle’s announcement, messages of love and support poured in from friends and fans. Author Refilwe Modiselle shared her sympathy, writing, “May God’s comfort & peace be with you & your family in this sad time.”

Media personality Carol Bouwer also expressed her condolences, saying, “Sending sincere condolences angel.”

Singer Loyiso added, “O no sis. My deepest condolences. May His Spirit grant you peace and comfort at this time.”

As tributes continue to pour in, it is clear that Cynthia Shange’s life and legacy will not be forgotten.
