Reigning Miss South Africa 2024, Mia le Roux, is opening up about the emotional journey she experienced during her time wearing the crown.
Taking to Instagram, Mia shared a heartfelt message about what it truly meant to represent the country while also navigating her personal struggles. While her journey has been celebrated as powerful and inspiring, she revealed that it was not always easy.
In her honest post, she wrote, “Being differently abled doesn’t mean less. But it also doesn’t mean I’m never sad.”
Mia described her road to Miss South Africa as life-changing. “My journey to Miss South Africa was powerful. It was empowering. It was history in the making. But it was also heavy,” she shared.
As the first differently abled woman to win the prestigious title, Mia said she often felt pressure to always appear strong and positive. “Somewhere along the way, I felt the pressure to always be inspiring. Always smiling. Always strong. As if being differently abled meant I had to prove my worth by never breaking. As if empowerment cancelled out sadness.”
However, she came to an important realisation. “But the truth is, empowerment and sadness can coexist.”
Mia explained that her growth throughout her reign was not simple or straightforward. “There were days I felt on top of the world. And there were days I felt the weight of expectation pressing down on me. Growth wasn’t linear. It was up and down. It was confidence followed by doubt. Strength followed by vulnerability.”
She admitted that she sometimes feared showing her difficult moments. “I was afraid that if I showed my hard days, people would question my capability. That vulnerability would be mistaken for weakness. That honesty about struggle would somehow undo the progress and work on breaking the stigma surrounding persons with disabilities.”
But through reflection, she realised something powerful. “And then I realised, denying my full human experience is its own form of ableism.”
Mia made it clear that being differently abled does not mean she has to constantly inspire others. “Being differently abled doesn’t mean I exist to be a constant source of inspiration. It just means I navigate the world differently. And I’m allowed to feel all of it.”
She ended her message with a reminder about what strength truly means. “Strength is not pretending you’re okay. Strength is allowing yourself to be human. Strength is allowing your identity to be imperfect.”
Through her honesty, Mia is once again using her voice to challenge stigma and remind people that even those who inspire millions are still human.
