Cyan Boujee Joins Showmax’s Bold New Docuseries ‘Slay Queens’

South African DJ, YouTuber, and influencer Cyan Boujee—real name Honour Zuma—is taking her story to Showmax. The 24-year-old social media star will appear in Slay Queens, a brand-new five-part Showmax Original documentary set to premiere on 31 October, with new episodes dropping every Friday.

The series, produced by Vusi Zion and his creative collective Kaimal Pictures, dives deep into the world of women who chase the so-called “soft life” by any means necessary. Vusi is also behind the Showmax hit Soft Life, known for its raw storytelling and sharp social commentary.

But this time, the spotlight is on the women who are often judged, misunderstood, or glamorised online—women like Cyan Boujee.

Taking to her Instagram stories after the trailer dropped, Cyan had a little fun with her appearance in the show. She wrote:

“LOL!! The Showmax post says slay queen… the reality is I’m just the baddie in the documentary. Cute mix-up. Let’s have a perceptive after watching. Thanks bye.”

According to executive producer Vusi Zion, the aim of Slay Queens is to open up conversations people usually avoid.

“Slay Queens was born from a need to hold up a mirror to a world we often speak about in whispers, memes, or judgment, but rarely listen to directly,” he explained. “I was inspired by the courage of women who live these realities every day, by the men and communities affected, and by the silence surrounding their truths. My role as a filmmaker is not to sanitise or sensationalise but to create a platform where voices that are usually dismissed or caricatured can be heard in their full complexity.”

The documentary doesn’t only feature influencers—it also gives screen time to ballers, nightlife insiders, and ordinary people who witness or shape this culture.

Cyan Boujee, known for her bold personality and unapologetic confidence, opens up about what it’s really like to live under constant public scrutiny. She talks about the pressure to stay relevant, the cost of fame, and the challenges that come with maintaining her image as one of South Africa’s most talked-about young women.

Also featured in the series is Mr JazziQ, the award-winning Amapiano DJ and owner of Jozi’s popular nightclub Vibes on Main. He shares his front-row perspective on how slay queens dominate nightlife culture and influence the industry in unexpected ways.

Adding depth to the conversation is Jackie Phamotse, author and media personality, who brings her own lived experience as a former slay queen. Known for her best-selling book Bare, Jackie opens up about the emotional highs and lows of that lifestyle and what it took for her to leave it behind.

Rounding out the cast is Lebo Masango, anthropologist and author of The Soft Life: Love, Choice and Modern Dating. She unpacks the social and economic reasons behind the rise of the slay queen, exploring how transactional relationships and the pursuit of independence shape modern womanhood in South Africa.

Other voices include a sangoma, an Uber driver, and a club promoter, all offering raw, honest takes on the “slay queen era.”

As Vusi Zion sums it up: “Slay Queens doesn’t just document a lifestyle—it challenges the systems, stories, and stereotypes behind it. It shines a light on those who live, critique, and capitalise on the slay queen era.”
