Somizi Mhlongo is ready to conquer the fashion world. The award-winning entertainer, known for his larger-than-life personality, has announced that he will unveil his debut clothing line at the prestigious Durban Fashion Fair (DFF), a platform celebrated as one of Africa’s biggest showcases of style and design.
“10 days to my first runway show,” Somizi wrote in his post. “To say I’m super proud of myself is an understatement. Hayi shem, I’m BOLD and BRAVE. See you at @dbnfashion_fair.”
The 52-year-old star will launch his women’s collection, Sompire Femme, on Friday, 19 September, during the grand finale of the fashion fair. The DFF, now in its 14th edition, will run from Wednesday, 17 September, to Friday, 19 September, at the Durban Exhibition Centre. Over three exciting days, more than 60 of Durban’s top designers will present everything from children’s fashion to suiting, streetwear, and eveningwear.
For Somizi, debuting his designs at DFF is deeply personal. Speaking to IOL, he said, “My umbilical cord is in this province. My father’s family is based in KwaMashu. It is home. Therefore, being part of DFF is an honour and it is time.”
He added that his fashion studies influenced his choice, explaining, “I told myself, if I were to showcase anywhere for the first time, it had to be at DFF. One, it’s home. Two, I have history with the brand. And three, DFF has positively impacted so many local designers.”
Although Somizi launched Sompire Kids in 2023, he always had his heart set on designing for women. With Sompire Femme, he aims to celebrate women who embody elegance, strength, and bold self-expression. “It’s a blend of ready-to-wear and couture, inspired by the 2025 DFF theme, ‘The Awakening’,” he explained. “The collection features original prints. I dedicate this line to Amandlozi akithi – my ancestors.”
Fans and celebrities have already shown their excitement and support. Actress and award-winning makeup artist Nomsa Madida commented, “You are exactly who you say you are.” Another fan, @forever_north, added, “We never stop learning or going after our dreams. Congratulations, Mr. Mhlongo. What an inspiration.”
Others praised his constant evolution, like @caroltembo6, who wrote, “You have been evolving forever, and this is you in your element. From aerobics, dance, cooking, and now designing – you do it all so effortlessly.”
On his Instagram stories, Somizi expressed his joy, saying, “I’m super excited about this new journey and this new venture. I will be showcasing for the very first time at the Durban Fashion Fair my new baby Sompire Femme.”
