The South African Social Media Awards (SASMAs) are back, and this year’s line-up of nominees is filled with some of the country’s biggest online stars. The event, set to take place on November 22, 2025, has already created a buzz, with voting lines open until November 8.
Known as one of the most respected platforms for digital recognition, the SASMAs honour influencers, brands, and agencies that have used social media in impactful and creative ways. Unlike other awards that focus mainly on marketing, the SASMAs spotlight influencers and creators who shape culture and conversations online.
One of the leading nominees this year is Lasizwe Dambuza, who has secured three nominations. The TV host, media personality, and YouTuber is up for African Social Media Star of the Year and Social Media Personality of the Year. His YouTube dating show, Awkward Dates, which puts him on blind dates with celebrities, has also been nominated for Popular Content Across All Social Media Platforms. The show, produced by his company TD Media, has become a fan favourite, solidifying his role as a major player in South African digital entertainment.
But in an unexpected twist, Lasizwe posted a video on Instagram asking his supporters not to vote for him.
“Please don’t vote for me,” he said. “These three nominations already mean my work is appreciated. That, for me, is a win.”
All SASMA categories require paid voting, with a minimum of R10 buying four votes. While this system funds the awards, Lasizwe made it clear that he could not ask his fans to use money during tough times.
“The voting system costs money, and I do not believe you should have to pay to show support. That money could go towards bread, electricity, taxi fare and actual survival.”
He continued, “I cannot in good conscience ask you to spend your hard-earned money so I can hold a piece of glass that will collect dust. Your support, your comments, your views, your love. That is the real award.”
Lasizwe’s statement has sparked discussions online, with many praising him for being honest and considerate of his audience’s financial struggles.
Meanwhile, Ashley Ogle, reality TV star and influencer best known for Big Brother Mzansi, is also making waves with multiple nominations. She is competing for Emerging Social Media Personality of the Year, Most Popular Hashtag on Social Media, and Best Social Media Newcomer of the Year.
With names like Lasizwe and Ashley on the list, this year’s SASMAs promise to be one of the most exciting editions yet—whether or not fans cast their votes.
