Beneath the glitz and glamour of the Amapiano music scene lies a world filled with intense competition, where only a few truly understand the struggles that come with success. In a candid conversation, DJ Maphorisa has given fans a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the realities of the industry.
During a recent interview with Metro FM’s Tbo Touch, the music heavyweight opened up about how much the game has changed over the years. “It’s tough now, it’s not easy – it’s not like before,” Maphorisa admitted.
His honesty caught Tbo Touch off guard. “Wait, wait, wait. I’m getting a headache. If I’m an upcoming artist listening to this conversation and the biggest artist says it’s tough, I’m going to give up. How is it tough, Phorry?” Touch asked.
Maphorisa didn’t hold back. “There’s too much competition. People have short attention spans. They may love one song from you and stick with that for about six months. But if you release 10 hot songs, not all of them will get the reception you expect.”
He explained that the shift in audience behaviour has forced artists to rethink how they release and market their music. The emotional and creative impact can be heavy, especially when fans connect with only one hit from an entire album.
Using his own work as an example, Maphorisa revealed, “I dropped an album called ‘Ngomoya’. So far, I’ve released 28 songs, but they only really like one.” His words reflect the frustration and pressure artists face when their hard work doesn’t get the recognition they hope for.
Despite these challenges, Maphorisa remains at the top of his game. His openness comes ahead of the highly anticipated “Scorpion Kings Live with Friends” concert, which will take place at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday, August 29. The event is expected to draw fans from across the country, cementing the duo’s position as Amapiano royalty.
Maphorisa’s revelation is a reminder that even the biggest stars face hurdles, and the road to success is never as effortless as it may seem from the outside.
