Social media star, DJ, and content creator Cyan Boujee recently sat down with Freshman Magazine for a no-holds-barred interview where she opened up about her upbringing, fame, and the challenges that come with being in the spotlight.
Cyan Boujee , whose real name is Honor Zuma, grew up in Mamelodi and shared that her childhood was mostly calm, although strict. “Growing up in Mamelodi for me was really chilled because I got to learn a lot. I was in the house most of the time because I’ve had a really strict dad—my whole life he’s been strict, till today,” she said. “It’s risky living in the hood, but it builds confidence.”
She described one of her happiest childhood memories as the moment her mother told her she would be getting a baby brother. “That was the best thing in the world,” she said with a smile.
Cyan Boujee also opened up about her rise to fame, revealing that she knew she had “It Girl” energy when she became a DJ. “I think I realised it when I became a DJ and a lot of kids wanted me at their freshers’ balls at universities. I just started travelling and performing for 20,000 people. Even when I wasn’t that good yet, they would scream for me. They were just there to hype me.”
Her first taste of going viral? A mispronounced product name. “I remember I was trending over a product. Apparently, I didn’t say it properly and I was trending number one.”
On whether she would still be famous without scandals, Cyan Boujee believes so. “I’ve always wanted to be an actress. I knew I would be on TV eventually. It’s not just scandals—I think I trend a lot because of how I overcome situations. I live the way it is. I take things as they come. So yes, I would still be famous without the scandals.”
When asked about love, Cyan Boujee shared what she’s looking for in a partner. “Be funny. We can’t be chilling and having awkward moments. I just want a God-fearing man. Don’t be someone that doesn’t believe in God.”
She also addressed one of the biggest misconceptions about her. “People think I’m a bully and I beat people up. I’m not a bully,” she joked. “It happens once a year, it’s not a consistent everyday thing.” She continued, “I just treat people how they treat me and I react 10 times worse.”
Talking business, Cyan Boujee revealed she once earned R280,000 for a single Instagram post, proving that being an influencer can seriously pay off.
Travel-wise, her favourite destinations so far have been Turkey and Dubai. “Turkey was really good. What I went there for made a big difference in my life. And Dubai—I just came back last week and I really enjoyed it.”
Despite her flashy lifestyle, Cyan Boujee says she’s still figuring things out. “Underneath all the glam is a very grounded girl. Honor is still learning from her mistakes. Honor is real. I encourage everybody to just stay real. Being real means accepting your flaws and pushing through anyway.”
She also addressed viral gossip about her BBL surgery. “I put it out myself. But the way I said it made people think my BBL isn’t in the right position anymore. No, I just had a lump. It can happen from an infection after surgery.”
Through it all, Cyan Boujee remains unapologetically herself—real, bold, and still learning.
