Afrobeats is no longer just a genre—it’s a global movement. The growing international recognition of African artists is proof that the world is finally tuning in to the rhythm of the continent. From the Grammy Awards to the Billboard charts, African musicians are making their mark—and now the American Music Awards (AMA) is showing them even more love.
On May 26, 2025, the AMAs were held at the luxurious Fontainebleau resort in Las Vegas. Among the many awards handed out that night, one category had all of Africa buzzing: the “Favourite Afrobeats Artist.”
The category featured some of the biggest names in African music—Wizkid, Rema, Asake, Tems, and Tyla. Each artist has had a strong year, but it was South African star Tyla who walked away with the win.
According to Billboard, Tyla was named the Favourite Afrobeats Artist at the 2025 AMAs. Her fans flooded social media with love and excitement, with many posts on X (formerly Twitter) reading, “Congrats to Africa’s first pop star” and “Congratulations to Tyla, well deserved.”
This isn’t the first time Tyla has received major recognition. Back in February 2025, she was honoured with the Impact Award at the Billboard Women in Music Awards. Her achievements continue to break new ground not just for herself, but for African artists as a whole.
And there’s more good news—Tyla is set to host the 2025 Kids’ Choice Awards on June 21 in Santa Monica, California. She will become the first African artist to ever host the event. That night, she is also nominated for two awards: Favourite Global Music Star and Favourite Music Collaboration.
