South African talent stole the spotlight at the 97th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, as actors from the film The Last Ranger showcased their heritage through stunning fashion choices. The film, produced by Kindred Films, was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film, although the award ultimately went to I’m Not a Robot. According to IOL, the film’s actors Avumile Qongqo, Liyabona Mroqoza, and executive producer Anele Mdoda all turned heads with their outfits, which celebrated the rich Xhosa culture.
Mdoda made a stylish statement in a red and black dress by designer Asanda Madyibi. This wasn’t her first appearance at the Oscars—she hosted the M-Net red carpet in 2019 and 2020. Despite the loss, Mdoda remains proud of the film’s success. “The New York Times said they wanted us to win, Deadline called us to win, and The Hollywood Reporter also said it’s us. So we may have lost, but I think we’ve won the film industry’s hearts,” she said.
While The Last Ranger didn’t take home the Oscar, it has won hearts globally by bringing attention to pressing issues like rhino poaching, a cause close to the film’s theme. Mdoda reflected on this: “The awareness for rhino poaching is at an all-time high, which is ultimately wildlife—the only thing that we have over the rest of the world.”
South Africans have expressed their pride on social media, celebrating the film’s global recognition. Mdoda continued, “To stand on an international stage and be considered amongst the best for such a wonderful piece of work, written by David Lee and directed by Cindy Lee, and brilliantly acted by Avumile Qongqo and Liyabona Mroqoza, I think it’s a win.”
The film’s powerful message about conservation and wildlife protection has resonated far beyond the red carpet, showing that even in loss, The Last Ranger has achieved a victory for both South Africa and the global fight against rhino poaching.
