The latest controversy in Big Brother Mzansi has sparked outrage among fans, who called for the immediate disqualification of housemates Ash-ley Ogle and Bongiwe “Bonni B” Booi. The backlash stems from the two housemates making insensitive remarks about fellow contestant Florence “Kay B” Maphirime’s traumatic experience as a rape survivor. The incident has raised questions about the housemates’ respect for sensitive issues and the show’s commitment to upholding its rules.
In a recent episode, Kay B bravely opened up about her experience as a rape survivor, sharing her emotional journey with the other housemates. However, Ash-ley and Bonni B’s response was less than supportive. Instead of showing empathy, they dismissed Kay B’s trauma, accusing her of seeking attention. This callous attitude didn’t sit well with viewers, many of whom quickly took to social media to express their anger and demand accountability.
The situation prompted Big Brother Mzansi to take action. Both Ash-ley Ogle and Bonni B received a strike for their behavior, a move that drew mixed reactions. In an official statement, Big Brother Mzansi acknowledged the public’s concerns, saying, “We appreciate your keen observation and the effort you took to bring this matter to our attention. The opinions and views expressed in the Big Brother Mzansi season 5 house are those of the housemates and do not represent the views of Mzansi Magic, LottoStar, Robertson’s Spices, and Chillers Punch.”
The statement continued, emphasising that Big Brother takes the rules seriously. “Big Brother will continue to address any disobedient behaviour that does not adhere to Big Brother’s rules and while he is not able to force any housemates to apologise, he is determined to drive mutual respect among all housemates.”
DStv also explained that the housemates had violated critical rules outlined in the Big Brother Mzansi rulebook. According to Article 16, any housemate who engages in physical violence is immediately disqualified. While Ash-ley and Bonni B’s actions didn’t involve physical violence, the rulebook also condemns behaviours like bullying, provocation, and victimisation, which can lead to disciplinary action. As a result, both housemates were handed a strike each for their inappropriate remarks toward Kay B. Big Brother warned them that further violations would lead to their disqualification.
The tension was palpable when Ash-ley and Bonni B had to face Biggie during their diary sessions. In a tense exchange, Biggie confronted them about the mood in the house and their role in the ongoing conflict. Bonni B described the atmosphere as calmer, following a previous argument, while Ash-ley blamed the tension on petty fights and attention-seeking behavior.
When asked if they believed some housemates were insensitive, Ash-ley admitted to trying to stay calm amid the chaos, while Bonni B acknowledged that hurtful words often replace physical aggression. Biggie then pressed them to reflect on their actions and define respect. Ash-ley recognized her insensitivity, attributing it to the pressures of life in the Big Brother house. Bonni B, on the other hand, explained that her bluntness often comes off as rudeness due to her lack of filter.
The diary session ended with a stern warning from Biggie, emphasizing that Big Brother Mzansi will not tolerate vulgar language, sexual violence, or racial remarks. Ash-ley was specifically cautioned about using degrading language, while Bonni B was reminded of the seriousness of making light of sexual violence. Both were urged to reflect deeply on their behavior.
