The vibrant life of South African songstress Winnie Khumalo will be honoured during her memorial service at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg on Wednesday, January 15, at noon. Khumalo, known for her powerful voice and captivating performances, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, at the age of 51 after a brief illness, leaving behind a lasting legacy in South Africa’s music scene.

Her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, writing, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Winnie Khumalo, who left us on 7 January 2025 after a short illness. Born on 20 July 1973, Winnie captured our hearts and made her mark in the music industry in 1988 with her debut album, Hey Lighty. Affectionately known as ‘Dwinky Dwinky’ during the 80s, her voice and talent brought joy to many.”

Winnie’s younger sister, Tshepi Rakeepile, also confirmed the news, telling Daily Sun, “Winnie passed away after a short illness. This morning, she was not feeling well, and her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, rushed her to the hospital. Unfortunately, upon arrival at Baragwanath Hospital, she was pronounced dead.”

To her family, Winnie was far more than a star. “She was a beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and cousin,” Tshepi added. “Her loss leaves a void that will be deeply felt by her family, friends, and fans alike.”

Winnie’s influence on South African music was undeniable. Kalawa Jazmee Records described her as a “true icon,” noting that she “made a remarkable contribution to the South African music scene, inspiring many with her powerful voice and unforgettable performances.”

A funeral service for Winnie Khumalo will take place on Saturday, January 18, though the time and venue has yet to be confirmed.
