Grace Mondlana, a dynamic South African content creator, has won the prestigious Emerging Creator Award at the DStv Content Creator Awards, marking a significant milestone in her creative career. Speaking with IOL, Mondlana shared her inspiring journey from being a classroom teacher to becoming a full-time content creator, a shift she never imagined but fully embraced.

“For the longest time growing up, I had a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. Teaching for me drives this impact,” Mondlana said, reflecting on her passion for education and empowering the youth. Her creativity in the classroom deeply resonated with her students, making her role as an educator one she held dearly.

However, like many, the pandemic forced her to reconsider her path. “I began my journey in content creation during the pandemic while searching for a creative outlet,” she recounted. Struggling with her own wellness, Mondlana turned to social media to share her experiences, offering a sense of comfort and connection to others facing similar challenges during the uncertain times.

What began as a personal outlet soon evolved into a full-fledged passion, and eventually, Mondlana decided to leave teaching to pursue content creation full-time. “It wasn’t an easy decision but I believed in myself, and here we are today!” she exclaimed, proud of the courage it took to pivot into a new career.

Now a well-established creator on TikTok, Mondlana’s day is a busy mix of creativity, organisation, and connection. From early morning runs and a dedicated skincare routine to attending brand events and developing content for upcoming partnerships, she is fully immersed in her new life. “Some days I also attend brand events and regularly work on content for upcoming brand partnerships,” she explained.

Mondlana’s first big break came during her university days, collaborating with a bubble bath brand on her first paid partnership. Today, she counts her work with Coke Studio as one of her most thrilling campaigns. Reflecting on her rise, she said, “To think that one day, I just picked up my phone and began to share my life only to be recognised among the best in the industry is surreal.”

Winning the DStv Emerging Creator Award has been a moment of affirmation for Mondlana. “It has been so affirming and fulfilling,” she said of the recognition. Her advice for aspiring creators? “Just start, even if it’s not perfect. Authenticity is key. Overcome that self-doubt and believe in yourself. And remember, find your niche.”
