Durban businessman Mhlonishwa “Mhlo” Gumede, known for his marriage to singer Zandie Khumalo, is making headlines once again as rumours swirl about him taking a second wife. The couple, who tied the knot in 2016 and celebrated their traditional wedding in Umzinto, KwaZulu-Natal, have shared a strong bond over the years. Their union was blessed with a son, Zenala, born in 2021, and they’ve remained a picture of happiness ever since. But recent developments suggest that their family may be expanding in a surprising way.
Reported by ZiMoja, according to a close friend, Gumede is reportedly set to marry Nonjabulo Mdluli, the niece and publicist of the late media personality Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule. The insider revealed that the families have already met and even held a welcoming ceremony for Nonjabulo just days before Zanele’s untimely passing. The source also mentioned that Nonjabulo, who has worked closely with Zanele, has been struggling with her death, but Mhlo has been a pillar of strength for her during this difficult time.
When approached for comment, Mhlo expressed his commitment to protecting his family, stating, “Everything I do, I make sure I protect my family and put them first.”
Zandie, on the other hand, seems fully supportive of the idea of polygamy. Speaking to ZiMoja, she shared her deep-rooted belief in iSthembu (polygamy), citing her upbringing in a polygamous household. “I am an African and completely for iSthembu, ngikhulele khona esithenjini (I grew up in a polygamous home) through my grandfather. I am here kwa Gumede ukuzokwakha umuzi (to build the Gumede name), and uGumede is the leader and the head of this family,” Zandie said. Her unwavering love for Mhlo shines through, as she expressed, “My husband loves me dearly, and I love him even more. I love that man, and I care about him, and I want nothing bad to happen to him.”
Despite her openness to the idea of a second wife, Zandie chose not to comment directly on Nonjabulo’s potential role in their family. Instead, she emphasised the importance of supporting Nonjabulo during her grieving period. “Whether this story is true or not, it’s a family matter, but nje kuba mnandi manibaningi ekhaya mukhulu nalomuzi wakwa Gumede (it’s nice when you have a sister wife, and the Gumede house is big). I need all the help I can get.”
