Zahara Continues to Shine, Even in Death, with Two South African Afro Music Award Nominations

Even in death, the legacy of the late singer and songwriter Bulelwa “Zahara” Mkutukana continues to resonate. Reported by ZiMoja, Zahara, who tragically passed away in December 2023 after battling liver complications, has been nominated for two awards at the upcoming South African Afro Music Awards. The songstress had been hospitalised for three weeks before her untimely passing, leaving behind a powerful musical legacy.

Known for her soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics, Zahara touched millions with her music, particularly with her 2011 debut album, Loliwe .This album, which shoot her to fame, is now nominated for Best Afro Album Of Democracy. Additionally, Zahara herself is a nominee for Best Female Afro Soul Artist Of Democracy, a category that set her against other musical powerhouses like Zonke Dikana, Siphokazi, Judith Sephuma, Moneoa, and Thandiswa Mazwai.

The South African Afro Music Awards, set to take place on October 26th at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, promise to be a night of celebration and reflection. In addition to Zahara’s nominations, the awards will honor industry legends Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Chicco Twala, Lindelani Mkhize, Mandisa Dlanga, Thapelo Khomo, and Sam Mhangwani with lifetime achievement awards.

Zahara’s sister, Bandezwa, spoke with pride about her sister’s nominations, telling ZiMoja, “My sister’s work will live on forever. She deserves to be celebrated. She has worked hard, and we hope to attend. If she wins, we can accept the award on her behalf.”
