Actress Ama Qamata, renowned for her roles in Blood and Water and Gomora, is set to star in the upcoming film Fight Like A Girl. Inspired by the true story of Congolese boxing legend Balezi “Kibomango” Bagunda and his all-female boxing team, the film addresses the issues of sexual violence and endemic poverty that plague many women in the Congo.
Fight Like A Girl follows the journey of a young Congolese woman who escapes her captors from an illegal mineral mine and finds empowerment and a new life by joining a prestigious all-women boxing club in Goma. The film, shot in Rwanda and Congo DR, is a powerful narrative about determination, courage, bravery, and the indomitable human spirit amidst the depravity of war.
Nominated for eight African Academy Awards and a winner at the SA Indie Fest, Fight Like A Girl is poised to make a significant impact. The film will premiere at the African Film Festival in Auckland, New Zealand, on July 25th at The Capitol Cinema. The 118-minute feature, spoken in both English and Swahili with English subtitles, promises to be a compelling and moving experience for audiences.
