Women For Change has expressed deep outrage over the alleged leak of a sex tape by Themba Selahle, known as ‘Grootman’. This act of revenge porn, targeting Gcinile Twala, is not only a severe violation of privacy but also a deeply traumatising experience. The organisation is demanding justice for Gcinile, calling for Grootman to be arrested and held accountable for his actions. They urge law enforcement, policymakers, and community leaders to stand firmly against revenge porn and all forms of gender-based violence.

Themba Selahle allegedly leaked the tape of his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child, Gcinile Twala, in an attempt to humiliate and control her. Gcinile shared a direct message from Themba, which read: “You have to listen to me. I order you to pack up everything I have ever bought you with money. I cheated on people to make you look better. From every single piece of clothing to shoes, bags, my previous engagement ring, iPhone, makeup chair I bought from Takealot, and anything else you know you never bought me. Post it in Cape Town in the next 3/4 days and send the tracking number, you really have 4 days to do this.”

Revenge porn is a particularly insidious form of abuse, intended to degrade and harm the victim, leaving them feeling exposed and powerless. This malicious act is illegal in South Africa and carries severe emotional and psychological consequences for survivors. The widespread sharing and commenting on the video on social media only amplify the trauma.

Public reaction on social media has been overwhelmingly supportive of Gcinile.

One user on X stated, “I would gladly wear my robe to interdict this fool pending the criminal case.” Another reflected, “Justice for her. Perhaps also a moment of reflection on how this could have been avoided in the first place.” A third user condemned the behaviour, saying, “Gents, such behaviour exposes your immaturity and weakness. This isn’t being an alpha male. This is using force and attention to somehow ‘win’, which is embarrassing. If you’re not happy or your girl left you, leave it there and go better yourself for better.”

This incident underscores the urgent need for stronger laws and more effective enforcement against revenge porn. It also highlights the importance of educating individuals about the profound impact such actions can have on victims. As a society, we must support survivors, demand justice, and work together to prevent such heinous acts from happening in the future.
