Watch! Zenande Mfenyana Reveals Why She Cut Off Her Dreadlocks. The actress took to her socials to let her followers know that a new phase in her life had begun with getting rid of her signature look she’s had for two decades long.
Zenande took to her Instagram page to explain that the push factor to having dreadlocks was due to Lauren Hill’s album titled The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Further stating that her dreadlocks were in honour of her late brother who passed away in 2001.
“So, I’ve always wanted to have dreadlocks. These have always been an ode to my late brother uYongama. When The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill came out, that year – I know I am that old – he said, ‘oh my gosh you’d look so amazing with dreadlocks’… and because I live and breathe him, I would literally fantasise myself with dreadlocks and [think], ‘I actually like it’,” Zenande explains in the Instagram video.
Mfenyana went on to further add that her deadlocks were looked down upon back in High School and that many teachers didn’t not approve of her locks. This further pushed her to even consider keeping her dreadlocks after finishing her matric in 2003.
Back in May of 2020, the actress took to her Twitter account hinting at letting her dreadlocks go but didn’t necessarily want to do so because of her daughter.
“I thought I would have cut my hair by now, but I figured my daughter picked me like this when she was choosing her Mama, so the locks stay. I don’t want her to give me the side eye when she meets me for the first time,” her tweet read.
Many of her celebrity friends, Sophie Ndaba, Lunathi Mpofu, Pearl Modiadie and her own sister, Akhe Mfenyana were some of the people to wish her good luck on embracing her new look.
